John Paul Bransom was born in Washington, D.C. and had been drawing animals from early childhood. At the age of 13 he became an apprentice-draftsman assisting with patent drawings. He spent his free time at the Washington Zoo sketching the animals. Bransom moved to New York where he was employed with the “New York Evening Journal’ drawing the comic strip “The Latest News from Bugville”. Bransom’s goal was to become animal illustrator for magazines and he spent a great deal of time at the Bronx Zoo.

During his long career, he illustrated nearly 50 books pertaining to wildlife, one of which was Jack London’s “Call of the Wild”. In addition to his illustrations, Bransom did fine-art paintings. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Watercolor Society, and the Society of Animal Artists. He exhibited at the Los Angeles Cartoonist Club.
