Frost was considered by many to be the best illustrator of rural America, having illustrated many books of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frost served as an apprentice to local engravers and lithographers as a youth.  His formal training consisted of night classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he studied under Thomas Eakins.  He traveled to the Rockport Art Colony, Cape Ann, Massachusetts, to study under marine painter Gilbert Tucker Margeson, and with William Merritt Chase, at Shinnecock Hills School of Art near Southampton, New York.

In addition to being an illustrator of books, Frost provided illustrations for Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s, and Life magazines.  An avid sportsman, Frost is primarily known for his hunting, fishing and golfing depictions.

He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, Society of Independent Artists, Society of Illustrators, and Tile Club (New York) where he also exhibited.  He also exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair, Columbian Exhibition (1892-93) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
