Fairchild likely resided in Santa Barbara, California, although she could have resided elsewhere and visited Santa Barbara. In the 1920s and 1930s, Santa Barbara at the time was a noted artists’ colony; artists that included Colin Campbell Cooper, Borein, Borg, and Elmer and Marion Wachtel, with whom Fairchild had studied. She also studied with the socialite and noted San Francisco artist Bertha Elizabeth Stringer Lee. There is still a little, yet undiscovered, history regarding this artist. Although this painting has “Miss Agnes Baldwin Cooper” in ink script on the back, we’re uncertain as to whether she married, or if she had, what her married name was. This painting “Violets,” appears to reflect the influence of the academically trained former Philadelphia artist Colin Campbell Cooper.
