Schreyer was born in Philadelphia in 1862. He studied at Pennsylvania Academy of the fine Arts in Philadelphia and later studied with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris and also, in Paris, with Dagnan-Bouvert. Schreyer painted still-lifes and landscapes that included wildlife, fishermen, chickens or sheep. This painting, “Violin. Bow with Sheet Music,” demonstrates his mastery of the still-life. It exhibits a subtle “trompe l’oeil” effect, with an intimacy that a true music aficionado would appreciate; although one with a discerning eye can appreciate the skill with which this painting was executed. Schreyer died in 1902 at the age of 40.
