Henry Hintermeister was born in Brooklyn, New York to John Henry Hintermeister, an artist who had come to the United States from Switzerland before Henry was born. Hintermeister studied with Pennsylvania illustrator Weston Taylor, O. Beck at the Pratt Institute (NYC), and New York City illustrator Anton Otto Fisher. Hy, as he was known, collaborated with his father from the 1890s into the early 1940s. and they would become well-known for their exquisite illustration art. On his own, Hintermeister’s works have been compared to those of Norman Rockwell – both were great painters. Hintermeister was recognized by his peers as not only a talented illustrator but also a highly accomplished fine art painter.

He was a compulsive worker and was known to have painted every genre – including a number of glamour and pin-up illustrations, although sentimental genre, animals often interacting with people, especially children – usually in a humorous vein were a large part of his oeuvre. Almost every major calendar company of that time sought Hintermeister to produce illustrations or artwork for their calendars. Hintermeister was a member of the New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society and NAC and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. During the early 1940s he and his father produced calendar illustrations chronicling history from 1775-1787.

This painting “Sail On O Ship of State” is an original oil painting by Henry Hintermeister circa 1948 used for a calendar.

High auction record for this artist: $38,000.
